As we all know, for a team to be successful, they have to be influenced by a strong leader. We’ve looked at some of the best NHL leaders in history, and delivered our findings here.
Best all-time NHL team leaders in our opinion
- Mark Messier
Mark Messier is incredibly famous in the NHL, and he has achieved this fame for all the right reasons. He will forever be hailed as a king for the New York Rangers, as he led them to their very first Stanley Cup Victory in 1994. As a bit of a play on words, New York Rangers fans started to refer to him as ‘The Messiah’, which we are sure he really was for a lot of people.
This wasn’t Messier’s only Stanley Cup victory during his career, however, as he managed to do this a total of 6 times. Aside from the nickname of The Messiah, he has also been known as ‘The Moose’, due to his sheer strength and aggressive demeanor on the ice.
- Maurice Richard
There won’t be too many reading this that have witnessed Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard play live, as he was at his best back in the 50s. Much like Mark Messier, Maurice Richard was a serial Stanley Cup winner, and he was one of the first to ever win back-to-back Stanley Cups for his team. As a matter of fact, between 1956 and 1960, he won the cup every single year.
If you want to look for an even more impressive statistic for this guy, we must go back a little bit further. Richard was the first NHL player to score more than 50 goals in a single season, which was an incredible achievement, even to this day. If you follow hockey, this is why the NHL’s top-scorer is now awarded the ‘Rocket Richard’ Trophy.
- Steve Yzerman
Steve Yzerman really was a leader of all leaders. He first became a captain at the age of 21, and funnily enough, he remained the captain for the entire 20 years of his career. He achieved this feat playing for the Detroit Red Wings, and he was named MVP multiple times during this period.
One thing is for sure, you don’t remain the captain of a team for two decades without having some serious leadership skills! Even to this day, this is the longest spell of any team captain in NHL history. There are other players these days that display similar characteristics, but there are few who come up with as many clutch goals as this man did during his career.
