Multi-JUNO and CCMA Award-winning country group James Barker Band is ushering in a new chapter with the release of its latest single, “After Dark,” a heartfelt anthem that signals a fresh creative direction for one of Canada’s biggest country music success stories ahead of their Boots and Hearts Festival Show August 9.
Released June 26 through Universal Music Canada, “After Dark” is the Woodville, Ontario-formed band’s first new music of 2026 and showcases a more organic, folk-inspired sound while maintaining the memorable melodies that have helped make James Barker Band a fixture on Canadian country radio.
Produced by acclaimed hitmaker Todd Clark, whose résumé includes work with Noah Kahan, Lewis Capaldi and Phillip Phillips, the song marks the beginning of what the band describes as an exciting new era.

A Song About Letting Go While Holding On
On the surface, “After Dark” paints a familiar picture: friends sharing a beer and a bourbon after a long day. But beneath its laid-back barroom setting lies a deeper message about healing, friendship and moving forward.
The song explores the emotional balance between leaving life’s hardships behind while appreciating the people who help carry us through difficult times. It reminds listeners that even during life’s toughest moments, no one has to face them alone.
Frontman James Barker says the inspiration came from a simple ritual common in neighbourhood bars.
“I feel like it’s a common thing, especially when you’re at a dive bar, to get a beer and a shot,” Barker explained. “You get them together and the whole thought was like, one for you, one for where you’ve been. The bourbon’s to forget the things you’ve gone through and the beer’s for the dude who’s just hanging out tonight. So it’s kind of that juxtaposition.”
A New Creative Chapter for James Barker Band
According to Barker, “After Dark” represents more than simply another single—it’s the beginning of a renewed artistic vision.
Over the past several months, the band has deliberately stepped away from outside distractions to focus on creating music that feels honest and emotionally authentic.
“We’ve spent the past six months working hard to block out unnecessary noise and focus on writing songs that make us feel something in our souls,” Barker said. “We’re trying to carve out a sound that isn’t based on where we’ve been, but where we’re going. We want our music to connect with people because it’s real.”
That philosophy is evident throughout “After Dark,” which leans into warm acoustic instrumentation and storytelling while preserving the band’s signature hooks.
International Momentum Continues to Build
The release arrives as James Barker Band continues expanding its reach well beyond Canada.
Fresh off a U.S. tour that included a sold-out performance in New York City, the quartet recently surprised more than 30,000 fans with an appearance at Chicago’s Rate Field during a Chicago White Sox game.
Meanwhile, audiences across the United Kingdom and Europe continue discovering the band’s music through both streaming platforms and energetic live performances, helping build an increasingly international fan base.
