Conservatives force Trudeau Liberals to take stand against China

The Hon. Michael Chong, Conservative Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, today released the following statement regarding the adoption of a Conservative motion by the House of Commons, which calls on the Liberal government to take a stand on Communist China and defend Canada’s national interest:

“Today, Canada’s Conservatives demonstrated that they are ready to lead Canada by taking a strong stand on Communist China to defend our national interest. I thank my colleagues who voted for the motion, including five Liberal members.

“Now is the time for the Liberal government to get serious on the Chinese regime. Canadians expect the Liberal government to uphold our democratic norms and respect the will of Parliament by taking action to defend Canada’s national security and make a decision on Huawei and Canada’s 5G network, and by developing a plan to protect Canadians against Communist China’s growing influence operations here at home.

“It is time the Trudeau government acknowledge their approach to the Chinese regime has not worked. The Trudeau government must acknowledge that their passive approach has failed to defend Canadians and our national interest. It’s time for action.

“Canadians are watching to see if Prime Minister Trudeau upholds the democratic will of Parliament and puts an end to the incoherence and inconsistency that have marked the Liberal government’s relationship with the Chinese communist regime.

“Today is a start, but much more needs to be done. A Conservative government led by Prime Minister Erin O’Toole will put our national interest and values first. It is time to stand up for Canada.”
