OTTAWA – July 24, 2023 – A severe thunderstorm watch possibly accompanied by hail has been issued for the Ottawa area by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).
Canada’s trusted weather source says “conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. “
Strong wind, heavy rain and hail
ECCC says Ottawa area residents this afternoon and into the evening can expect “strong wind gusts near 90 km/h and possibly “Hail up to nickel size. Locally heavy rainfall of 30 to 50 mm.”
When will the bad weather happen
ECCC says the heavy rains and thunderstorms can be expected this afternoon and this evening.
Thunderstorms may briefly become severe as they move across the region.

Merrickville-Wolford – Kemptville; Westport – Charleston Lake; Brockville – Prescott; Gananoque – Mallorytown; Maxville – Alexandria; Cornwall – Lancaster; Winchester – Newington; Morrisburg – Long Sault; Prescott and Russell; Renfrew – Arnprior – Calabogie; Smiths Falls – Perth – Eastern Lanark County; Plevna – Sharbot Lake – Western Lanark County; Ottawa North – Kanata – Orléans; Ottawa South – Richmond – Metcalfe
Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.
Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.
Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
