Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued for Ottawa, heavy rain, flooding possible

OTTAWA, July 16, 2024 – Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms this afternoon that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and torrential rain, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada. Although, at the moment the storm appears to be remaining lower near the St. Lawrence River, severe thunderstorms are still possible in the Ottawa region.

The storm already ripped through the GTA cause massive amounts of flooding and rendering 165,000 homes without power.

Hazards: Wind gusts up to 90 km/h. Local rainfall amounts up to 50 mm possible.

Timing: Continuing into early this evening.

Discussion:

Thunderstorm development still remains possible, however, more of the thunderstorm activity looks to remain near the St. Lawrence River and south. In the event these thunderstorms track north, they may bring strong winds and heavy rain to the area.
