OTTAWA, July 11, 2022 – A very rare trade has just been announced as Ontario and divisional rivals Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired Senators goalie Matt Murray, Ottawa’s third-round selection in the 2023 NHL Draft and a seventh-round selection in the 2024 NHL Draft while the Ottawa Senators will receive “future considerations.” In addition the Senators will be retaining 25% of Murray’s salary as part of the trade.
Murray, 28, has backstopped the Senators in 246 regular season games (2020-21 to 2021-22) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (2015-16 to 2019-2020) over the course of his seven-year NHL career winning two Stanley Cups with the Pens, posting a record of 132-78-22 with a 2.77 goals-against average, a .911 save percentage and 14 shutouts.
In international competition, Murray helped Canada capture a silver medal at the 2019 IIHF World Championships and suited up with Team North America at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
Murray was originally selected by Pittsburgh in the third round (83rd overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft.
The two-time Stanley Cup Champion was almost traded to Buffalo during the draft but he used his no-trade clause as an out. Last season Murray lost his start spot to Anton Forsberg and even spent some time in the AHL.
Murray should feel right at home with Toronto as Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas and head coach Sheldon Keefe worked with Murray when he was playing for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in his OHL days.
