In a storybook finish under blizzard-like conditions at TD Place, Atlético Ottawa captured their first-ever North Star Cup with a dramatic 2–1 extra-time win over defending champions Cavalry FC from Calgary.
David Rodríguez was the undeniable hero, scoring both goals—including an unforgettable first-half bicycle kick that will go down as one of the greatest in Canadian Premier League history.
“It’s the best goal ever in this league. Ever in this league,” said Atlético coach, Diego Mejía.
“I didn’t think about it. I just did it,” Rodríguez told Sportsnet.
Watch highlights:
Cavalry had struck first in the 31st minute after Fraser Aird converted a penalty, but Ottawa answered just nine minutes later when Rodríguez’s acrobatic finish electrified the home crowd and levelled the score at 1–1.
The second half saw both sides battle through worsening conditions, with goalkeepers Nathan Ingham and Marco Carducci trading brilliant saves. After 90 minutes, the match remained tied, forcing extra time on a pitch freshly cleared by snowplows.

In the 107th minute, Rodríguez delivered again in spectacular style—latching onto a lofted ball from Manuel Aparicio then coolly chipping it over Carducci to seal Ottawa’s historic victory.
Rodríguez, named man of the match, reflected on his unforgettable night, particularly the game winner: “I’m never going to forget this night. I just want to thank all the people that showed up tonight.”
With the win, Atlético Ottawa not only lift their first CPL championship but also earn a place in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup—marking their debut on the continental stage.
