The National Capital Commission wants to remind Ottawa residents and visitors that although cold temperatures have arrived, the Rideau Canal Skateway is not yet ready to welcome the public. The ice on the canal’s surface is still thin. Signs have been posted at access points to advise the public.
The water level beneath the ice surface varies from 1 m (3 ft) to 4.3 m (14 ft) deep between downtown Ottawa and Dow’s Lake.
Work crews have begun operations on the Skateway over the last several days. This must not be taken as a sign that the ice surface is stable. The crews who are flooding the ice to thicken its surface are professionals who know how to manage the risks associated with their work.
The Rideau Canal Skateway will open when the ice is deemed of good quality, suitable and safe for the general public.
