Ottawa’s Young at Art Exhibition Celebrates 30th

OTTAWA, May 25, 2026 — Taking place from May 14 to June 8 this year, Ottawa’s Young at Art exhibition launched 30 years ago in 1996 to showcase the talent of youth in the city. The program’s success has grown over the years, with more than 160 applications in 2026 and 43 incredible young artists advancing to the exhibit selection process!

“Young at Art has lasted for 30 years because it continues to support and showcase the talents of young visual artists.” Says Areej Qassem, Program Coordinator. “By offering a professional exhibition platform and feedback from professional artists, the program creates an inspiring environment that supports their creativity and encourages them to keep developing their skills and talents.”

“It plays an important role in helping young artists grow by providing early exposure to a professional exhibition environment where they can present their work publicly, share their ideas, and build confidence in their artistic voice. It supports their artistic journey by encouraging experimentation and strengthening their creative practice.

The program also fosters growth by offering meaningful feedback and recognition from peers and professional selection committees, while building connections with artists, educators, sponsors, and the broader arts community. These relationships support learning and continue artistic development.

Over time, Young at Art has responded to youth needs by expanding artistic categories and opportunities, ensuring a wider range of artistic practices are represented and making the program more inclusive and relevant to diverse young artists across Ottawa.”

These artworks can be seen at the Shenkman Arts Centre, Salons A and B of Trinity Art Gallery. Artists are separated into two groups; junior, from 12 to 15 years, and senior, from 16 to 19 years. Each piece is evaluated by a selection committee of artists with extensive backgrounds in the arts, culture, and/or arts education. The criteria is based on originality, overall impression/elements of art and design, technical ability and composition.
