The Rideau Canal Skateway Closes for its 56th Season

Rideau Canal Skateway closes for season March 4, 2026

After a remarkable 56 days of skating, walking, and wonderful memories, the Rideau Canal Skateway season is sadly coming to a close. Ottawa’s iconic and majestic Rideau Canal Skateway will officially end its 56th season today, Wednesday, March 4, at 10 pm.

Over One Million Visitors

Since its early opening day on December 31st, 2025, the Rideau Canal Skateway has recorded over one million visits on the ice, according to the National Capital Commission, making this a truly incredible and memorable year.

All winter long, the Skateway’s maintenance crews and contractors rose to every challenge. Through overnight shifts and harsh weather, they kept the ice pristine, ensuring skaters enjoyed some of the best conditions this season.

As the blades come off and the snow begins to melt, the National Capital Commission is already shifting into summer mode, gearing up for a fresh lineup of new and returning activities across Ottawa.
