OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators announced today that the team has acquired forward Ryan Dzingel from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for forwards Alex Galchenyuk and Cedric Paquette.
A native of Wheaton, Ill., Dzingel was originally drafted by the Sens back in 2011. Dzingel returns to the Senators in the midst of a campaign in which he has registered four points (two goals, two assists) and two penalty minutes over 11 games in his second season with the Hurricanes.
Dzingel, 28, was selected by the Senators with the team’s seventh-round draft pick (204th overall) in the 2011 NHL Draft. Over 343 career NHL games with Ottawa, the Columbus Blue Jackets and Carolina, he has posted 171 points (76 goals, 95 assists) and 137 penalty minutes. He has also tallied four points (three goals, one assist) and eight penalty minutes over 28 NHL post-season contests.
Dzingel’s return to the Senators sees him tied for 32nd among all-time franchise players in points (126) while ranking 43rd in games played (247).
Both Galchenyuk and Paquette had been skating in their first season respectively for Ottawa.
Paquette, a forward, has one goal in nine games this season. He was acquired with defenseman Braydon Coburn in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Dec. 27.
Selected in the fourth round (No. 101) of the 2012 NHL Draft, Paquette has scored 86 points (48 goals, 38 assists) in 386 regular-season games with the Senators and Lightning and 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in 91 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He won the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay last season.
Galchenyuk, a forward who signed a one-year contract on Oct. 28, has one goal in eight games this season.
“Cedric is a strong, physical forward who won the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay last season,” said Don Waddell, the Hurricanes general manager and president of hockey operations. “We’re excited to add both of these players to our forward group.”
The No. 3 pick in the 2012 draft, Galchenyuk has scored 321 points (136 goals, 185 assists) in 557 regular-season games with the Senators, Minnesota Wild, Pittsburgh Penguins, Arizona Coyotes and Montreal Canadiens and 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in 32 playoff games.
